The Tops’l Story

Tops’l Is:

A mashup of the exhilaration that comes from your first taste of independence at summer camp, the comfort, simplicity, and get-your-own-dang-glass-of-water spirit of your Grandma’s kitchen, and the laid back smoothness of a perfect Anejo tequila.

Our hope is that your time at Tops’l allows you to explore where your curiosity takes you as you reconnect with nature on the gorgeous Maine coast, one starry night, one blueberry at a time.

The Reason

Sometimes you’ve got to shift gears to make room to move and breathe.

We came from busy lives doing complex things that left us exhausted. We needed a place to get our hands in the dirt, our faces in the sun, our feet in the water, good food lovingly made in our bellies, lingering campfire smoke in our clothing, and a whole new set of pastimes that didn’t add more stress to the burden of daily life. Funny, we were told that when M.S. Smith purchased Tops’l in 1936, he sought the same things.

We offer quiet morning walks in the woods, salt from the Medomak River on the breeze, and the timeless act of gathering around a table with friends. A space to try (and fail at) new things, room to ponder next steps without interruption or instruction, and some friendly new faces to join (or not) for s’mores at the campfire.

Our intention has always been to create pockets of space and time where you can sit long enough to know what you want (not should or need) to do next - and whether that next thing should happen right now...or after a dip at the local swimming hole.

The Crew

Tops’l Farm is a home away from home to many, but most of all to our crew.

Up here, we’re pro picnic basket packers, cider brewers, foraging aficionados, and expert campfire builders. These are the faces you’ll probably see a time or two during your time on the farm.

The History

Tops’l Farm began in 1936 when M.S. Smith sought a place in Maine where he could escape, sail his boat on the river, and start a farm.

For generations their family gathered, played, worked, and rested here. We don’t think much needs to change.

“Our dreams are pretty simple really. Our goal is to bring this property back to a working farm. We want to sustain our family’s food. Raise animals and cultivate gardens and continue to learn from the land.”
